Accidentally they awakened the last "living" alien, crystal creature of incomprehensible biology and unknown intentions able to crystallize any organic matter by touch. Greedy miners didn't hesitated to break, having no clue that their discovery was truly a ship of long forgotten alien race which crashed there eons ago. At first it looked just like crystal wall. Unfortunate for them however deep below ground they found what ancients tried to hide forever. So instead humanity explored what they could - mostly ruins of their fallen empire, but also prehistoric cities deep underground. Age of Death took centuries of research and technology away, successfully making dreams of exploring outside their little planet to stay only dreams forever. In the darkness of outer space countless races lives on countless planets, each one as different from another as possible, but humans were never supposed to encounter them. Since they left caves, humans watched night sky and wondered what really is up there among the stars. It violently attacks any shape it doesn't recognize, which happens to be almost everything on Greavesoyl. Shard can only perceive moving objects and their shape. What adult specimens are capable of is currently unknown. This exact creature is, despite being over 10000 years old, a child.
It's unknown how Shard's race feeds and reproduces. The acid that Shard can spill also shares this crystalizing properties.
Shard's entire body is made of purple crystal that can crystalize all organic matter it touches. It's base form is long creature with sharp edges and cubic head that can open to spit pink acid. Shard measures about 3 meters, however it's shape and form changes often.
